Feeling Overwhelmed? How to Get Unstuck and Start Taking Action

Have you ever had so many ideas, dreams, and possibilities swirling around in your head that you don’t know where to start so you don’t start at all?
You’re not lazy. You’re not unmotivated.
You’re simply stuck in overwhelm.

Overwhelm is sneaky. Sometimes it shows up when life is busy and you have too much to do. But other times, it creeps in when you actually have plenty of time—you just don’t know which goal to focus on first. Either way, the result is the same: you spin your wheels, fill your time with distractions, and wonder why you aren’t making progress.

Recently, I had a conversation with a new friend that perfectly illustrated this. She had a list of amazing dreams: acting in a play, starting a food truck, and several other creative pursuits. But because she couldn’t decide which one to start with, she wasn’t doing any of them.

The moment I challenged her belief that she had to choose just one, her perspective shifted. We brainstormed ways she could pursue more than one dream—either simultaneously or in sequence. Suddenly, her energy changed. She went from stuck to inspired, from “I can’t” to “I can.”

And that’s what I want for you.

Why Overwhelm Stops Us in Our Tracks

Overwhelm happens when our brain tells us there’s too much—too many options, too many steps, too many unknowns. Instead of moving forward, we freeze.

We think we’re “waiting to decide,” but in reality, we’re often scrolling social media, binge-watching TV, or staying busy with low-priority tasks because decision-making feels uncomfortable.

The truth? Action breaks overwhelm. But first, you need a way to choose your next step without second-guessing yourself into paralysis.

Step 1: Recognize When You’re Overwhelmed

For me, overwhelm feels like a giant rubber band wrapped around my chest, making it hard to breathe. For you, it might be a tight jaw, a heavy feeling in your stomach, or racing thoughts.

When you notice your personal overwhelm signal, name it: “I’m feeling overwhelmed.” That awareness is your first step toward breaking free.

Step 2: Do a Brain Dump

Your mind is a busy place, and the fastest way to clear it is to get everything out on paper.

Write down every single thing you want to do—no matter how big, small, or random it seems. (Yes, even if one of them is “own an airplane.” Been there!)

Once it’s out of your head, you can look at it without all the emotional clutter.

Step 3: See If There’s an Order

Sometimes your goals have a natural sequence—an A-B-C or 1-2-3 order. For example:

  • Before starting a food truck, you might need to create recipes, get a business license, and research available trucks.
  • Before launching a course, you might need to set up your website so people have somewhere to sign up.
  • Before doing a triple turn in dance, you need to master the double turn.

If you see a clear order, start with step one and work your way down.

Step 4: When There’s No Order, Just Pick Something

Here’s where most people get stuck. If there’s no obvious “first step,” you might think you have to figure out the perfect starting point before you move forward.

You don’t.

Pick something—anything—from your list and start. You can:

  • Choose at random (literally draw from a hat)
  • Pick the easiest thing so you can check it off quickly and build momentum

Momentum is powerful. Once you’ve started, it’s much easier to keep going.

Step 5: Remember—You Don’t Have to Choose Just One Dream

One of the most freeing mindset shifts you can make is this:
You can do all the things you want to do.
Maybe not all at the same time, and maybe not all in the same season, but you don’t have to pick one dream and abandon the rest forever.

You can act in a play and run a food truck. You can start a side business and train for a marathon. You can be multi-passionate and still make progress.

When Overwhelm Isn’t the Only Problem

Sometimes, it’s not just overwhelm – it’s time. Or it’s both.
Either way, the solution is the same: you need a clear plan.

And if you’ve been struggling to make that plan on your own, I’d love to help.
